Kathleen Ewing "Washington has a number of excellent galleries specializing in photography; but for consistently high quality and a brisk schedule of lively, diverse exhibitions, the leader of the pack is Kathleen Ewing. Crossing the gallery's threshold is like entering the slightly funky home of a person with an exceptional eye for fine photographs. ....Her original idea was simple: feature the best fine-art photography, ranging from the late 19th century to contemporary artists from Washington and the world, and do it nice and easy. 'When I opened the gallery, I really didn't like the feeling you got in most galleries I had been in. They were really cold, intimidating and sterile,' Ewing recalls. 'So I decided to do it differently. We want people to feel at ease here, like they do in their own home. When they come in, we probably have the stereo going, we may be having lunch, tea or whatever. And we're friendly. I'm sure some people don't like that degree of informality. But it works for us.'
Kathleen Ewing represents over 40 contemporary photographers and maintains an inventory of 19th and 20th century vintage photographs. The gallery has also organized exhibitions which have traveled to university galleries and museums throughout the United States and Canada: The Eastern Shore, platinum photographs by Steve Szabo; A. Aubrey Bodine, Baltimore Pictorial Photographer, 1906 1970; Seek What is True, 1940s portraits of tribal South Africa by Constance Stuart Larrabee; August Sander, Antliz der Zeit, portraits of German citizens in the first decades of the 20th century (in cooperation with the August Sander estate). Kathleen Ewing is the Executive Director of AIPAD, The Association of International Photography Art Dealers. Kathleen is responsible for organizing AIPAD's annual fine art photography trade show, The Photography Show, in New York City. Kathleen is also the Executive Director of the Art Dealers Association of Greater Washington, and she is a board member of the Washington Animal Rescue League. Kathleen Ewing is the author of the book, A. Aubrey Bodine, Baltimore Pictorialist, 1906-1970, published by Johns Hopkins University Press, 1985.
